You are obliged to notify BEC when the emergency rescue procedure was needed and report the error through the QR Code on your system.
This article only serves as a guideline to complete the emergency rescue procedure. Operators are working at their own risk and the risk of the passengers at all times and BEC will not be liable for any action.
Death or severe injuries may occur if the evacuation of passengers is delayed.
Risk of injury or damage to property may occur if undesired robot movements occur during the procedure.
At least 2 instructed persons are required for completion of the emergency rescue procedure. They musst be available at all times during robot operations.
Frequent training of the emergency rescue procedure is needed. Completing the emergency rescue procedure without sufficient training is highly dangerous for both the passengers and the operators.
The emergency rescue in case of robot failure is described in the following video:
The particular steps are the following:
- Keep the passengers informed about every step that you are taking to rescue them!
- Switch off both cabinets.
- Connect the break release device (check for green light).
- Check the break of the Axis always with a very short button press first!
- Recommended procedure to bring the gondola down to position where the passengers can go out:
- First Axis 6 => Upright position of passengers
- Then Axis 5 => Preparation for boarding position on the ground (way up)
Then Axis 1 => Move Robot to the boarding position - Then Axis 2 => As far down as possible (Don’t touch the hardware end stop!)
- Bring the motor of Axis 3 as far down as possible to operate the Motor of Axis 3 from a good position
- If necessary: Axis 3 => Downwards until the passenger can get out.
- Take care! Operating Axis 3 with the wrench is dangerous!
WARNING:
Always be prepared for the robot to move downward due to its weight. Therefore, always release the brakes briefly first. Also ensure the correct direction of the wrench.
1. Take the equipment from the locker room

- Brake release device
- Ratchet
- Ladder
- Restraint opening device
The equipment has to be stored near the coaster in the designated storage space at all times.
2. Connect the Brake Release Device (BRD)
The BRD-24V connector must be connected to the KUKA control cabinet in the locker room.
Then, the Break Release Device can be connected to the connector in the box in the operator station.
3. Move one Axis
Remove the cap from the motor to be moved by hand. Then insert the ratchet to move the motor
by hand.
Caution:
Never move the motor without opening the brake. The motor will be damaged and must be replaced.
If the passengers are upside down, make sure to move Axis 6 first, to reduce time upside down.
Important:
The opening of the brake and the movement of the ratchet must be coordinated with each other.
The robot should be moved with axis 1 towards the boarding position. This is important as the motors of axis 2 and 3 are then more easily accessible.
Movement of Axis 3
If moving axis 3 is necessary due to the robot position, great care must be taken!
The motor of axis 3 must be brought so close to the ground with axis 2 that it is possible to stand safely without a ladder:
The weight of the gondola and the passengers causes axle 3 to move downwards when the
brake is released. This creates a large force on the ratchet.
By briefly opening the brake, it must be ensured that the ratchet operates in the correct direction and that the operator is prepared for the resulting force.
The axis is not actively moved with the ratchet, but the force of the downward movement must be controlled with the ratchet to slowly lower the axis.
The correct and safe procedure is as follows:
- Attach the ratchet in the start position (handle to the right)
- Release the brake.
- Controlled release by turning the ratchet half a turn to the left.
- Close the brake.
- Pull off the ratchet.
- Attaching the ratchet in the start position (handle to the right)
- Repeat…..
4. Opening the Restraints
Once the gondola is in a good position for passengers to exit, the safety bars (restraints) can
be opened with the hand opening devices.
The gondola does not need to be brought into a position very close to the ground. It is sufficient to reach a position from which the passengers can safely disembark via the ladder.
